Erythrina mulungu
It is a tree native to Brazil that grows in different regions of the country and is often found near rivers. Because of its deep red flowers, it is also called the coral tree. Mulungu’s black-red seeds are often used to make handicrafts such as necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry.
The local populations have traditionally used decoctions of Mulungu bark for its medicinal effects. It has been used traditionally to relieve anxiety and promote restful sleep. It has been used as both a medicine and a tonic by indigenous tribes in the Amazon rainforests. Mulungu’s modern uses match its traditional history.
WARNING
Mulungu’s pharmacology suggests that it works through both the nicotinic acetylcholine and the GABAnergic systems. The primary active ingredients of this part of E. mulungu are Tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids, erysothrine, erythravine, and (+)-11α-hydroxy-erythravine. It is recommended not to use mulungu with blood pressure lowering drugs or in combination with other relaxants, sedatives, or anti-depressants, which can reinforce each other. Consult with your doctor before taking this product if you are uncertain about its suitability for your condition. Mulungu should not be taken immediately prior to or during the operation of machinery or driving.
