This herb is native to several countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe. The use of this plant has been traditionally linked with the treatment for symptoms related to pain and discomfort, as is the case with certain stages of cancer, osteoarthritis, and menstrual cycles as well. It has also acquired some fame as a natural sedative, especially to farm animals.

Its seeds are rich in a component in beta-carbolines, a chemical that can act upon the body in distinct ways, yet is primarily associated with stimulant action upon the brain and its functions while also offering antioxidant, antitumor, antiviral, and antimicrobial benefits.

Certain plant parts of Peganum harmala can be used as psychoactive substances, especially when ingested through the mouth, yet when diluted with other substances and applied to the skin, such effects are believed to be nulled. Harmine and harmaline are another set of compounds present in this plant, and can decrease heart rates as well as reducing arterial blood pressure.
