Tongkat Ali  or Eurycoma longifolia is a small evergreen tree from the Simaroubaceae (Simarouba family), growing to 15 meters tall. It grows in a spiral arrangement, pinnate leaves 20-40 cm long with 13-41 leaflets. The flowers are dioecious, with male and female flowers on different trees. They grow in large panicles, each flower with 5-6 very small petals. The fruit is green ripening dark red, 1-2 cm long and 0.5-1 cm broad.

Tongkat Ali uses

Locals attribute many supposed health benefits to Tongkat ali. In Indonesia they boil the root of the plant in water, and consume the tea as a health tonic and as an aphrodisiac, as well as the relief of fever, intestinal worms, dysentery, diarrhea, indigestion, and jaundice. In Malaysia, they apply a paste of Tongkat topically to relieve headaches and stomach-aches. As a supplement, it is marketed for the supposed benefits of sexual health improvement, as an energy and stamina booster, for improving blood circulation, to reduce stress, and fat reduction. In the drinks market, it is a common ingredient for coffee and beverages marketed as energy drinks.

Clinical research

There is no clinical data supporting the effectiveness of Eurycoma longifolia for any health benefit. However scientists do research on the subject and published papers on the matter. These include a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, parallel group study, clinical trial of 109 males. This study shows significant improvements in libido, sexual performance, satisfaction, physical performance, sperm volume and sperm motility. These results show great promise but they need more studies to be able to be more conclusive. Let’s see what future research brings, time will tell.
