Maya receives its Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) directly in bulk from Brazil. In this way we can offer a competing price for wonderful quality Yerba Mate. Our herb is a fresh green colour and is perfect for drinking warm in a Chimarrão or cold as Tereré.

The Chimarrão

The Chimarrão is prepared with hot water, not boiling but close. The herb is placed in the cup and with the palm of the hand it is formed to leave some space to the side. Here the straw or bombilla is inserted and the hot water fed in. It’s a drink that is traditionally shared and is seen as a social and cultural affair.

The Tereré

Tereré is a cold water infusion of the same Yerba Mate. It is placed in cup, sometime a larger quantity than for the chimarrão and ice cold water is added. Sometimes other herbs or fruits are added for additional flavour. It is also drunk and shared with friends or family. A pleasant ritual in the afternoon to sit around and chat and enjoy the freshness and the gentle caffeine buzz of the herb.
