Ilex guayusa is from the Aquifoliaceae (Holly family), in a family of over 450, which are widely distributed in both hemispheres. Most grow in tropical Central and South America.

Huayusa is used by people of the Amazon basin to make an energizing tea, with the interesting effect of inducing lucid dreaming, and being helpful in recalling them. Two teaspoons of shredded leaves, or 6-7 whole leaves are softly boiled for 20 minutes in a liter of water until the liquid has a golden transparent color.
